The Technique of the Counter Attack
It should be realized at this time that it is impossible to perfect all counters. Every counter requires hours of study and practice, and takes years to perfect. To try to perfect too many counters means perfecting none. Select those counters that seem easiest to perform and surest in result and concentrate upon them.
There are eight elementary counters that ever boxer should know. Out of the eight, at least four should be made automatics in execution. While only eight counters will be given, there are over seven hundred possibilities. A few of the most common counters are listed below.
Left Hand Counter for a Straight Left Lead
By Blocking or stopping
1. On a straight left lead, catch the opponents lead in the right glove, at the same time stepping left and drive a straight left to the chin.
By Parrying
1. On a straight left lead, parry to the outside guard position and hook the left to the solar plexus.
2. On a straight left lead, parry to the outside guard position and hook the left to the chin.
3. On a straight left lead, parry to the outside guard position and deliver a left uppercut to the chin.
4. On a straight left lead, parry to the inside position and drive a straight left to the chin.
5. On a straight left lead, parry to the inside guard position and hook the left to solar plexus.
6. On a straight left lead, parry to the inside guard position and uppercut left to the solar plexus.
By Slipping
1. Slip to the outside position and hook the left to the chin.
2. Slip to the outside position and hook the left to the solar plexus.
3. Slip to the outside position and drive a left uppercut to the solar plexus.
4. Slip to the outside position and drive a straight left to him.
By Sidestepping
1. Sidestep to the outside position and drive a left hook to the chin.
2. Sidestep to the outside position and drive a left hook under the solar plexus.
3. Sidestep to the outside position and drive a left uppercut to the chin.
4. Sidestep to the outside position and drive a straight left hand to the chin.
Right-Hand Counters for a Straight Left Lead
By Parrying
1. On a straight left lead, parry to the inside guard position with the right hand, then drive the right hand to the opponent's chin.
2. Cross parry the opponent's left lead with the left hand and drive a straight right to the opponent's side.
By Slipping
1. On a straight left lead, slip to the inside guard position and hook the right to the heart.
2. On a straight left lead, slip to the inside guard position and drive a straight right to the heart.
3. On a straight left lead, slip to the inside guard position and drive a straight right to the chin.
4. On a straight left lead, slip to the inside guard position and cross right hook to the opponent's chin.
5. On a straight left lead, slip to the inside guard position and cross a right to the solar plexus.
By Sidestepping
1. Sidestep to the outside guard position and drive a right cross to the opponent's chin.
2. On a straight left lead, slide step to the outside guard position and drive a right to the heart.
3. On a straight left lead, sidestep to the inside guard position and drive a right uppercut to the chin.
4. On a straight left lead, sidestep to the outside guard position and drive a right uppercut to the chin.
5. On a straight left lead, sidestep to the inside guard position and drive a right uppercut to the solar plexus.
